Maxfield Parrish described  himself as a businessman who worked with paintbrushes. He meant of course that he was as interested in making money as he was in producing appealing art. He had caused a national sensation with his first commission, being the comical tryptic of Old King Cole he had done for the Mask and Wig Club at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. By 1922, when he produced his famous Jell-O ads, he had achieved sufficient success, and he did not need to do product advertisements. But the commission paid him enough to attract his interest so he reached into him bag of fairy tale themes and pulled out an Old King-like character who he matched with a lovely young queen. He staged them in one of his trademarks designs.
